A far less successful ISO 6400 shot. Tons of ugly banding in the not-quite-dark sky. The dynamic range is significantly reduced. As usual, the noise is worst in blue and purple areas where the extra luminance info from the extra green pixels doesn’t help. This is a straight conversion with nothing but color temperature adjustment, however, and I intentionally picked something with a dark blue background and high dynamic range. If this photo was worth saving, some careful editing could eliminate most of the noise in the sky and perhaps restore some detail to the dark areas of the picture. A better solution would be to just take a better picture and get it right to start with, but I was trying to explore the limits of the new sensor.

I’m still getting comfortable with the idea of shooting at 3200 ISO on the 5d mkII. The results are not spectactular, but they are usable in areas of the photo that are well lit. There’s no hope of adding any kind of fill light or otherwise lightening shadow areas, however, unless you’re willing to convert to B&W.
